NYTimes.com Expands Its RSS Feeds to 27 Categories, Adds Most E-Mailed Articles and Multimedia

RSS, a mechanism for content distribution that provides users with another way to access Times content, also enables Web log publishers to add NYTimes.com links to their blogs. NYTimes.com/rss provides quick access to Times headlines and summaries, which are updated throughout the day and link back to NYTimes.com for the full article.

Catherine Levene, vice president, product, strategy and business development, New York Times Digital said, "RSS distribution of our headlines gives the segment of our audience using newsreaders and producing blogs easy access to continuously updated NYTimes.com content, generating both traffic and user registrations for the site."

NYTimes.com's RSS feeds include: Arts Health New York Region Technology Books International NYTimes.com Front Page Theater Business Media & Advertising Real Estate Travel Circuits Movies Science Fashion & Style National Sports

The new feeds include Most E-mailed Articles, Automobiles, Magazine, Multimedia, Week in Review, Washington and Editorials/Op-Ed. The new feeds also include Campaign 2004 and Times on the Trail, which both provide up-to-the minute political coverage.

To access RSS feeds, users can install newsreader software or use Web-based newsreaders to select and display feeds from Web sites that offer RSS. On NYTimes.com/rss, readers choose their feeds by clicking on the "XML" orange button next to each feed. Readers can also access this list of feeds through RSS links posted on the bottom of each page of NYTimes.com, or the XML buttons located on the bottom of the home page and section fronts of the site.

NYTimes.com RSS feeds, which drive more than a million page views per month to the site, have been available through a relationship with Userland Software since early 2002. RSS feeds are free and NYTimes.com currently uses RSS 2.0.
